Jim Dine - Head with Cap
Jim Dine’s Head with Cap presents an array of evocative ambiguities. Unlike portraiture, which identifies the sitter or his/her relation to the artist, Dine poses the identity and occasion for this sculpture as a question to be contemplated by the viewer. The pose of the head, whose chinless face rests unsteadily on its neck, drooped and absorbed in self-conscious reflection. The sunken eyes and withered nose seem to suggest a face heavily weathered by time yet perhaps hint at Dine’s later fascination with skulls and death.
